Kicheko Sykes, a native of Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 18, moved to Santa Monica, California to attend the Gemological Institute of America, from which she graduated in 1981. She attended California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) where she received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Studio Arts. While at CSULA she began a body of work which reflected and celebrated her culture, her femininity, as well as her interpretation of beauty. In Sykes' body of work which consists of clay figures and oil painting, she focuses on the beauty of the object and simplifies a complex form or shape while maintaining its basic form and exemplifying its quiet beauty.
She remained in Southern California until retiring from the Los Angeles County Probation Department in 2024. She relocated to Temple, Texas in February 2025. Sykes discovered the Cultural Activities Center in July 2025 and resumed her work in clay.
